Access Gatwick

Having produced Air Surface Access Strategy (ASAS) reports for both Heathrow and Stansted, it’s not surprising that we’re a bit specialised in this field. Our client, who had left Stansted for Gatwick, wanted us to carry on the good work. We were happy to obligue.

The strategy is fundamental to Gatwick’s long term success and a central part in their delivery of sustainable aviation. What made this special was the timeframe the strategy would cover – the first time one of these reports ran in sync with rail franchises.

What made it fun for us was second-guessing where technology would be in 2030. A workshop run by Arup produced some interesting insights into the future of surface transport to and from the airport – the Robo-taxi, Cloud Vision glasses, Verge concept phone and even Robotic parking.

We continue to monitor and update the strategy as some of these technologies get closer to fruition.

Chartered Society of Designers

Being asked by a client to ‘get involved’ with a new programme for the Chartered Society of Designers, a world recognised professional body for design was an honour. They wanted to brand the overall programme in a practical style.

As the ‘business’ side of the partnership featured over 100 of the UK’s leading branding managers and directors of mostly FTSE 250 companies, the route we took was to make everything black and white. There used to be an old BT adage – ‘sell in four colours and tell in two’. This was particularly appropriate for this audience.

That didn’t mean we couldn’t be original. Each quarterly tabloid news update could be stored in a recycled leather folder (free with edition one!) which in turn aged over time. The editions were soft-folded to present the edition title on the fold.

Guest illustrators added flair to articles making the whole design feel fresh, inviting and personal to such a distinguished audience.

And the old lady on the cover? She was actually a 25-year old PHD graduate who, complete with restricting body frame and make up, discussed the major issues facing an ever-aging population.

Heathrow Vehicle Liveries

We’ve been involved with Heathrow for a long time – in fact, through four ‘identity evolutions’. Our latest involvement got us looking at vehicle liveries. Conspicuity on-airport is vital – as is vehicle identifiers for the Control Tower to see who’s doing what.

Sizes and shapes ranged from cars and vans, through JCBs and snowploughs, right up to state-of-the-art fire engines! And, depending on use, each had their own variation on chevrons.
